Some folks and I were having a chat this morning about the rainfall in Da Nang and Hoi An, and the question of which place gets more rainfall came up. Some of us were sure that Da Nang received more while some of us thought Hoi An received more, so I figured this would be a good one to investigate and find out what was really going on.

For the Reunification Day - Labor Day holiday at the end of April and beginning of May, I wanted to take Kelsey on the A Luoi Loop through west-central Vietnam. This amazing road, which traverses through the still-wild Truong Son Mountains, is one of the signature drives of central VIetnam, and I was keen to show it to Kelsey, who hadn't seen it yet. When the holiday came, we set out early on a Saturday morning and began what would turn out to be a great motorbike trip.
High in the mountains to the southwest of Da Nang, in the range known as the Tho Thennon, there is a large river canyon incised by the Song Vang, or "Yellow River". This steep gorge through the mountains has a few decent sized tributary streams along it's path, and one of them that tumbles out of the Mountains of the Mist to the west is a stream who's waters are black. In an area of clear, blue, rushing spring water, and brown, sediment-laden river water, this is a bit of an anomaly. We checked this interesting stream out in April 2016, during the Reunification Day - Labor Day Holiday break.
In the middle of our Hung Vuong 2016 Road Trip, we spent the night in a hotel in Lao Bao, a town along the Lao-VN border. We had looked at some hotels in Khe Sanh but the pricing and options weren't that great, so we looked 15 km up the road, in Lao Bao, and found a great deal at a small hotel, so that became our overnight stop on the trip.
In early 2016 my good friend Kong told me about a waterfall he had visited before, down in Quang Nam, that he thought I would really enjoy. We kept making plans to go see it, but those plans kept getting interrupted by unexpected things coming up. However,, in late March of 2016, we finally put the team together and made it out to the falls, and got a great day trip out of it as well into Nam Giang District of Quang Nam.
We had arrived back from Thailand literally the day before the Valentine's Day, and since we didn't want to spend too much on something extravagant for the holiday but still wanted to mark the day, we settled on a trip down to the secret waterfalls in Quang Nam. We had discovered these falls a couple weeks prior, on an exploratory mission, and since they are in a pristine, undeveloped condition it was somewhere I wanted to take Kelsey very badly.
Right in the middle of my late January exploration surge, I had a single day in between other adventures, but not wanting to be sedentary, I opted to turn it into a solo day. Not bothering to make any sort of plan, my only goal would be to just keep wandering and see where the road went. So many times my adventures are so planned and prepared, that once in a while it's nice to simply get out and explore with no plan at all. The weather was grey and overcast, but it wasn't actually raining, so it seemed like a good day as any to go for a drive.
* Some names have been changed or omitted in this report, in order to protect sensitive places. Look at these sexy hunks of man meat. What more could you ask for? You got the bearded one, the muscle of the group, and chief long shanks. What a perfect crew for exploring, all on their matching red Attilas...
As you might have gathered by now, I am pretty fascinated with water, whether it is rivers, lakes, streams, or oceans. One particular area of water I prefer is waterfalls. I absolutely love water falling off, down, or over rocks, and whatever form the waterfalls take, there is a connection to them that I feel on a deep level. Even before I was became a whitewater boater, I was always enchanted and attracted to waterfalls, and that love has only grown as I have journeyed along my path in canyoning, and whitewater boating.
