Ah, yes. The Wave. One of the most treasured and worst-kept secrets of the Colorado Plateau. A fantastic piece of rock, sculpted by wind and water that, thanks to a calender printed in Germany, has become THE destination for sandstone loving Europeans. The majesty and power of the place is undeniable; however, the crowds that have become focused knocking a visit to this place off their list have created an ugly side to this former hidden mystery. It's unfortunately a two-sided coin and it will be interesting to see how this place is affected over the next period of time.
Although most people associate the brilliant red sandstones of places like this with Utah, the Wave is actually in the state of Arizona, a handful of miles south of the UT/AZ border. The whole area is dotted with bizarre formations of Jurassic age Navajo Sandstone, and is split into several protected areas, including the Coyote Buttes North and South Permit Areas and Vermillion Cliffs National Monument.
