Located northeast of Siem Reap lies the ruins of Ta Prohm, one of the most popular complexes in the greater Angkor Wat area. This collection of buildings was built during the later part of the 12th and early part of the 13th centuries, during the reign of King Jayavarman VII, and was most likely a university, and possibly a monastery or center for religious study. Unlike Angkor Wat, Bayon, or some of the other ruins in the area, Ta Prohm hasn't been reconstructed, only stabilized, and it's current state is one of the reasons it is so popular with tourists, as it is largely overgrown with mosses and vegetation. In addition, several massive trees have taken root and grown in, through, and around the ruins, creating a fascinating scene of nature and ruins. It was featured in the first Tomb Raider movie, and is one of the most photographed places anywhere outside of the main Angkor Wat temple, especially because of it's bas-relief carvings and remaining statuary pieces. Rather than spend time talking about it, I have decided to simply showcase a number of photos of the complex, and let the ruins speak for themselves.
